When the X5 Sport Utility Vehicle first appeared, BMW enthusiasts gave it a lukewarm welcome. After all, in a company renowned for its performance coupes and sedans, how could an SUV possibly fit in? BMW engineers knew the answer, and once drivers climbed behind the wheel of an X5, they quickly became enlightened. The X5 proved a tall, heavy SUV didn't have to perform like a glorified truck and that luxury and off-road ability could be married without compromise. Now in its sixth-year of production, the X5 continues to hold up well, despite a gaggle of new competitors pecking at its heels. The X5 may not be the roomiest SUV you can buy (its rear seat and cargo area are actually quite small), but it's definitely a BMW and has the power and moves to back up the claim.
